Biography

“If variety is the spice of life, then LORD must surely be the hot chilli.”

LORD was born from the ashes of Dungeon, one of Australia’s most high-profile and long-running heavy metal bands. Dungeon began in late 1989, in the Australian outback town of Broken Hill and took their music to the world, releasing a string of albums and DVDs, and touring both nationally and internationally with bands such as Megadeth, Nightwish, Opeth, Nevermore, Edguy, Doro, Destruction, Angra, Metal Church and many more, as well as major festival appearances and their own headlining tours.

In 2003, Dungeon main-man “Lord Tim (L.T.) released an album of solo material under the moniker of LORD, comprised of music that he felt was too personal or inappropriate for Dungeon. The album, “A Personal Journey”, and LORD in general, was purely a side project at the time.

Fast forward to late 2005 and Dungeon had returned from a world tour with Megadeth. Internal tensions once again flared up within the ranks of the band, so much that it finally prompted L.T. to put an end to Dungeon and reinvent LORD as a legitimate band with fresh and hungry players.

Hitting the ground running in early 2006, LORD immediately embarked on a national headlining tour and then went on to share the stage with Queensryche, Nightwish, Nevermore, Saxon, Gamma Ray, Leaves Eyes and more, as well billing on festivals such as Metal For The Brain, Overcranked and Festival Of The Dead, and several more Australian and New Zealand headlining tours.

LORD expands upon the diversity that was established by Dungeon. Whilst Dungeon was very much grounded in the power / traditional / thrash metal genres, the band’s style often flirted with hard rock and melodic death metal.  LORD takes Dungeon’s open-minded approach and pushes the envelope even further, venturing into areas as diverse as AOR, mainstream rock/pop, and all the way up to the most extreme metal styles, all the while keeping one foot firmly planted in the solid stylistic base that Dungeon was renowned for.

These diverse influences culminated in the first “true” LORD album, “Ascendence”, released in 2007, featuring the lineup of L.T. (lead vocals, guitars, keyboards), Tim “T.Y.” Yatras (drums, vocals), Andy Dowling (bass, vocals) and Mark Furtner (guitars, vocals). This album was received enthusiastically by both fans and music critics alike. LORD followed up this album with 2008’s “Hear No Evil” EP, which was limited to 500 hand-numbered discs and included a cover of Kylie Minogue’s hit “On A Night Like This” that received extensive national mainstream airplay.

LORD is a band that just doesn’t sit still, both musically and on the road. Always searching for new ways to create the perfect song or reach out to the audience in their high energy, charismatic shows.

2009 promises to be the biggest year for the band yet. More national and international touring is planned, along with a new album entitled “Set In Stone” which takes the LORD sound in yet even more directions than ever before. A new young prodigy of a drummer, Damian Costas, also joins the ranks in time for the second leg of touring for the year that finally sees LORD setting foot on Japanese soil.

“Forever reaching higher, the writing is on the wall: LORD’s path is Set In Stone.”

LT

Have you been involved in any other projects whilst in LORD? Yeah - I played guitar on a techno album by Edrenalin (thanks for the royalties, guys! *grin*), guitars, bass, keyboards & programming for an excellent but weird-ass project called The Skinners, guest vocals for FROMBEYOND, guest vocals and bass for Fury, guitars and vocals for King Oath, guest vocals and programming for Ilium, guest lead guitars and vocals for Dark Order, guitars for Platinum Brunette, various paid session vocals, guitars and production duties on heaps projects around the place, and I'm planning to do an 80s inspired hard rock / AOR album sometime soon! Busy, busy, busy!

How long have you been playing? I've been singing (sort of) since about 1985 but didn't seriously take it up until Dungeon started in late 1989, playing guitar since 1987.

What gear do you currently use? Amp / effects: Warwick ProFet 3.2 rack mounted 300 watt bass amp, PODxt processor with the "Metal" amp pack (+ Roland FC50 foot controller), Shure UT Series UHF wireless guitar pack. Speakers: Messiah 300w slant quad (basically an Australian Marshall clone). Guitars: modified ESP M-II guitar, Strap: DSL Straps with Schaller strap locks, Strings: Dean Markley Blue Steels .009 - .046. Picks: Jim Dunlop .73mm Nylon.

Is your current instrument the one you started on? Oddly enough, guitar and vocals were the last things I took up! I started off wanting to be a singer but was too shy to actually do it until I was forced into the situation years later, then I took up keyboards, then drums, then bass, then guitar. Somehow, guitar ended up as my main instrument and then vocals.

What prompted you to start playing? Vocals - watching Simon Le Bon in Duran Duran's 'The Reflex' clip, believe it or not! I thought he looked so cool, I wanted to do that too! That got me into a lot of 80s pop bands and I just started singing along with them... then I discovered Queensryche! Wow! Guitar - interestingly enough, I just found out I could play one night when I borrowed a friend's guitar (same thing happened with drums and keyboards too) and I sort of figured out a few songs from one of the bedroom bands I was trying to form in lieu of having a guitarist who could actually play (*grin*)... It was probably really Brian Canham from Pseudo Echo that made me really want to play when I first heard the solo in 'Try' from their 'Love An Adventure' album. Once again, then I discovered Queensryche and Dokken and everything changed forever! :)

What is your most memorable gig? There's been a few... Dungeon's first gig in early 1990 - partly 'cos we were absolutely shitting ourselves (it was the first time I'd ever sung live!) and partly 'cos of the amazing, unexpected reaction we got from the crowd, Dungeon's first show in Japan in May 2003, the entire Megadeth tour throughout Europe in 2005 and especially the final Dungeon show - very emotional night. The entire Queensryche Australian tour support was something really special to me as well.

What is something about yourself that would surprise people who don't really know you yet? Despite the fact that I can play a few different instruments and I'm a pretty damn good typist (I can type heaps faster than I can write, in fact!), I am a total, uncoordinated klutz! I can't drive or swim so if you want to kill me, get me to drive a car along the side of a swimming pool! HAHA! I'm also a pretty good Mexican cook - my Fajita's are excellent! (Believe me, that surprises ME more than anyone!)

Do you have a personal website? I guess the closest thing would be my MySpace page.

Have you got any hobbies outside of LORD? I actually don't have much free time outside of LORD or recording in general. When I do get the chance to goof off, sleeping is my number one hobby, but I also enjoy first person shooter games (anything with a Redeemer or BFG-9000 in it rules), classic arcade games (Galaga champion!), photography and graphic design, building computers, reading, watching good movies (or really bad movies)... but yes, not much time to any of that stuff, sadly! Holiday, please!

L.T. - Vocals, Guitars, Keyboards

Real name: Tim Grose AKA "Lord Tim"

Birthday & Birthplace: April 2nd in Broken Hill, Australia

Instrument: Lead Vocals, Guitars and Keyboards.

Other instruments played: Bass and pretty ordinary (read: BAD!) drums these days!

Influences (playing): George Lynch (ex-Dokken, The Lynch Mob), Vito Bratta (White Lion), Tony Macalpine, Gary Moore, KK Downing & Glenn Tipton (Judas Priest), Adrian Smith (Iron Maiden), Pete Lesperance (Harem Scarem).

Influences (singing): Geoff Tate (Queensryche), Bruce Dickinson (Iron Maiden), Michael Kiske (ex-Helloween), Tony Martin (Black Sabbath), Don Dokken (Dokken), John Farnham.

Influences (song-writing): Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Helloween, (old) Metallica, Slayer, Duran Duran, Pseudo Echo, Koo De Tah, Blind Guardian, Kreator, Gamma Ray, Dokken, Queensryche, Leatherwolf.

What bands were you in prior to LORD? Dungeon, obviously, and few bedroom bands that never did anything at all.

What is the best thing about being in LORD? Several things, but the fans are the number one thing! Seeing the look of enjoyment on everyone's face during a show has kept me doing this stuff since 1989. As was with Dungeon, we have some of the most genuine, loyal fans in the world and for that, I can't even start to thank them enough! The other big thing is that this feels like a band at last - there's no grudges, no one is here to further just their own agenda and everyone's fun to hang out with. Pretty cool!

What is the worst thing? Lack of money, time, life, etc., long periods of sitting in a tour bus / flights, dealing with assholes who want to screw you over at every opportunity, industry politics (especially record label politics), audio editing (especially drum tracks! ARGH!), losing a lot of freedoms of speech in a public arena and unfair criticism by people who don't know you, but think they do.

Favorites:

  • Foods: Mexican (especially Fajitas), Indian, lamb loin chops, vintage cheese, mini spring rolls.
  • Drinks: JD & cola, Jim Beam & cola (especially Beam's Rye and Beam's Gold - yum!), Diet Coke, water and extra, extra strong brewed black coffee!
  • Movies / TV shows: Movies: All of the Star Wars movies, the later Star Trek movies, Lord Of The Rings, Toxic Avenger, Return Of The Killer Tomatoes, Back To The Future trilogy, Superman Returns, Spaceballs & any silly 'spoof' movie, The Naked Gun series, any good scary movie (The Exorcist, Poltergeist, etc.). TV: Doctor Who (new series especially), Southpark, The Simpsons, Family Guy, Drawn Together, Scrubs, House, Medium, Whose Line Is It Anyway
  • Books: Anything from the Dragonlance series (especially the first 6 books, and The Legend Of Huma), The Death Gate Cycle (by Weis & Hickman) and all of Matthew Riley's books - that guy is amazing and an Aussie too!
  • Bands: Everything I listed so far as influences, plus Kreator, John Williams, Hans Zimmer, Murray Gold, Dio, WASP, Megadeth, King Diamond, Alice Cooper, Vixen, Soilwork, Tania Moran, X Japan.
  • Sports: V8 Supercars, Australian Pro-Wrestling
  • Websites: Besides the LORD site and UltimateMetal.com forums, anything with the word 'nude' in it's gotta be a winner (*grin*), various other forums, various music websites, Cakewalk's user forums and anything to do with software, programming or recording - I like to get as much info as I possibly can...

Any other information you wish to divulge? Well, I'm engaged to an awesome girl and loving life. :) I enjoy really politically incorrect jokes a lot, but sadly can't tell them too often because people don't seem to understand that that's all they are - jokes. I do kid around a lot but when it comes down to it, I'm deadly serious when it comes to my career and my future... if you hang crap on my band, stand in my way or slow me down in any way, you'd better be prepared for a fight! Believe it or not, I'm actually a very shy and private person in real life, regardless of how I may come across when I'm being 'Lord Tim'.

Final comments: Thanks for sitting through this novel of a personal profile! HAHA! Thanks to all of the Dungeon fans who are now supporting LORD, also to everyone that comes to our shows, our site, our forum, etc. - you guys (and girls, of course) are the reason I'm still doing this stuff after so long and for that, I'm eternally grateful! So, thanks - you rule!! Get out there and support Aussie metal - we have some of the best talent down here in the entire world, folks!

Have you been involved in any other projects whilst in LORD? Nothing currently.

How long have you been playing? Bass? Since July 2004! Prior to that I was playing guitar and realised that everyone is/wants to be a guitarist and there was a shortage of bass players... so why not! :)

What is your most memorable gig? Definitely Donnington in front of 250,000 people (then I woke up! haha!). So far its been supporting Queensryche in Sydney, a dream come true. Our first show in Hobart (Tasmania) was pretty special as well.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Who the hell are you guys? What is this LORD band?
A. Scroll up, there's a pretty nifty bio there you know. ;)

Q. Who is this Dungeon band that keeps being mentioned?
A. In a sense, Dungeon is an older incarnation of LORD with a different name. For a complete Dungeon bio, check out www.dungeon.cd

Q. When are you coming to my city/country next?
A. Check out our TOURDATES. If you hear about any dates that aren't posted there, take them with a grain of salt because we only list stuff that we know for a fact is confirmed and happening on our site. While we would love to your city or country, logistically it just may not be possible. On the other hand, it may be in the works too. If you have any suggestions about somewhere we should play, drop our bookings department a line HERE. We can't make any promises but we'll do our best!

Q. Where can I get Set In Stone?
A. Set In Stone is released through Dominus Records and distributed in Australia/New Zealand via Riot! Entertainment, and in Japan via Rubicon Music. You should be able to find it in most record stores across either country and you can also buy this album directly from us at our ONLINE STORE, or you can purchase a legal download of the album if you'd prefer that HERE. Retail sales for Europe/USA/UK will be available soon. Please note: In Japan there is also a Soundholic Records release of the album that the band sees no income from, and contains less bonus material. We strongly suggest you purchase the Rubicon Music release.

Q. Where can I get Hear No Evil?
A. Hear No Evil is a limited edition EP that is only sold in the ONLINE STORE. It is limited to 500 hand-numbered copies. You can also purchase a legal download of this EP from HERE or HERE.

Q. Where can I get Ascendence?
A. Ascendence is released through Modern Invasion in Australia/New Zealand and Soundholic Records in Japan. You should be able to find it in most record stores across either country and you can also buy this album directly from us at our ONLINE STORE or via iTunes as a legal download. As yet, there is no domestic retail sales of this album in countries other than Japan or Australia/New Zealand.

Q. Where can I get A Personal Journey?
A. A Personal Journey is released through Modern Invasion in Australia/New Zealand. You should be able to find it in most record stores across either country and you can also buy this album directly from us at our ONLINE STORE or via iTunes as a legal download. As yet, there is no domestic retail sales of this album in countries other than Australia/New Zealand.

Q. Where can I get Live At The Metro?
A. Short answer: You can't as a physical CD. Long answer: This was an extremely limited edition live recording that was given away as a special eBay only bundle, limited to 10 copies. There are currently no plans to release this as a stand-alone disc, however it is available as a legal download HERE.

Q. Can my band support you?
A. Maybe! Usually our tour supports are chosen well in advance and sometimes the bill is put on by a different promoter than ourselves so we have little or no say in who is on the lineup. Send a message to our bookings department and we'll see if your band is appropriate for the show and if there's a spot free, and we'll take it from there. No promises, of course!

Q. I run a webzine/magazine/radio show/etc. and I would like a promo copy of your albums. Could you send them to me?
A. Possibly. Have a look at our CONTACT page to find out the correct place to ask for promos, and make sure you tell them exactly who you are and provide proof of what you do (it's unfortunate, but sometimes people lie to get free albums).

Q. I run a label and I would like to trade stock with you. Do you to that?
A. No, sorry. We have to pay for our own pressings or buy stock from other labels such as Modern Invasion. Our business relies on income from the sale of these items to go back into tour support or promotion, so giving albums away as a trade isn't possible.

Q. How much does it cost to have LORD play at my event?
A. Please contact our management to negotiate the price. Once that is settled, management will pass you onto our bookings department.

Q. Why did TY leave the band?
A. TY made a video statement regarding his departure which can be viewed HERE. Both TY and LORD remain on great terms, and TY is currently doing ongoing recordings with several new projects at LT's studio.

Q. Why is LT called "Lord Tim" and what is that "Lord Tim" stuff about anyway?
A. "Lord Tim" is a joke name that LT adopted when he was working as a DJ in a roller disco in Broken Hill, years before Dungeon even started. When he moved to Sydney, he had business cards printed up for his guitar lessons business with the name "Lord Tim", continuing the joke. After doing session work for a techno project called Edrenalin, his playing was heard by the head of BMG Music Publishing who was so impressed that LT was signed up as a writer under the moniker of "Lord Tim" and used it professionally ever since. This name is usually shortened to just "LT" these days, usually so that people who don't understand it's all tongue-in-cheek don't get the wrong idea and think it's somehow religious, egotistical or generally kind of dumb (which it is, but that's the whole point of the joke).

Q. Is LORD a Christian band?
A. No. Each member of the band have their own personal beliefs (as we all do), but that is their own business and has nothing to do with LORD itself. LORD has no religious or political leanings one way or another and any sense of a lyric or song title that would suggest otherwise is purely a coincidence.

Q. Isn't LORD just LT's solo project?
A. No. It did start off that way with A Personal Journey, which was recorded as a side project to Dungeon at the time, but since the dissolution of Dungeon in 2005, LORD became a bona fide band with every member contributing to the writing and direction of the band.

Q. Are there any plans to ever reform Dungeon?
A. No, that will never happen. In a sense, LORD is Dungeon, but just under a different name. We still play the Dungeon classics in our set to this day, and unlike how Dungeon ended up, LORD is still hungry and excited to be performing that material. More information about why Dungeon disbanded and why it will never reform can be found in THIS PRESS RELEASE.

Q. Is there any LORD or Dungeon tablatures available?
A. No, unfortunately not. The band neither has the time or skills to be able to write out tab for our songs. However, if you've taken the time to tab out a song and you think it's pretty accurate, CONTACT US and we'll check it out and possibly upload it to our site (with credit to you, of course).

Q. Will you sign my CD? Can I come over and say hello to you at a gig? Will you be available for a meet and greet before or after shows?
A. Of course, in fact we're more often than not wandering around in the audience at shows just hanging out with everyone and having a couple of drinks. At the end of the day, we're just you guys, but we just happen to be the ones standing on the stage making noise for a while during the course of the evening. Don't believe any rumours or the mock ego during our on-stage guitar duels, we're pretty down to earth guys who will be happy to have a chat if we have a chance!

Q. My favourite LORD or Dungeon song is "XXXXX" - why won't you ever play it?
A. Some songs are just impossible to play live for one reason or another. When we record, our aim is to make our albums the best they can possibly be, and sometimes the scope of those albums end up as something very vast, which may include dozens of guitar tracks, choirs, orchestras, sound effects, multi-layered vocals, etc. Some songs can translate well to a 2 guitar, 1 bass, 1 vocal and 3 backing vocal style band, but others are simply impossible. We are working on ideas to add in backing tracks for the extra parts on the more ambitious songs, so it's possible you may see some of your missing favourites played live yet! In other cases, sometimes we feel that the song wouldn't work so well in a live setting for the general audience, and in other cases, we're just damn bored with the song! It happens! Give us time, we'll get over it and probably add it back into the set somewhere down the track a bit.

Q. I found an error on the site or something is broken. Who should I tell?
A. Drop our webmaster a line HERE.

Q. I received a promo code with my copy of Set In Stone but when I tried to claim it on the LORD ONLINE STORE it said it was invalid. What's wrong?
A. There is a very nasty bug in the store script that unfortunately wiped all of the 1000 codes that we manually entered into the database, and any new codes are not being accepted by the system properly. If you would like to redeem your voucher, please contact store@lord.net.au with what item you would like to purchase, your promo code and how you would like to pay for the item and we will process it manually for you. Please note that these codes are only valid until December 31, 2009.

Q. I've sent people on your Contact page e-mails and there has been no reply. What gives?
A. For mail coming into LORD's organisation itself, sometimes there's a bit of a backlog of mail that can take a while to get to - we get a lot of mail every day, especially when the band is on tour, and it's hard to check regularly. If you don't get any reply within a few weeks, please feel free to send another mail to see if we received your first one. No big attachments, please - the last thing we need after coming back from tour is a mailbox full of 100 gigabytes of files! For mail going to our associated labels outside of the LORD organisation, that's out of our hands, I'm afraid. Try them again after a few weeks, and if that fails, let us know and we'll try to chase them up for you.

Q. My question isn't answered here. Who do I contact to get an answer?
A. Have a look at out CONTACT page for the correct place to send your message and someone will be happy to get back to you with an answer.
